No, its not that, I'm just curious how its works. Has the CD been marked with that SmartWater stuff ?

I have no clue about "watermarked" cd's, but I think copy controlled cd's install a small piece of software so that your computer doesn't recognise there's a playable cd in the drive. Or that only the player on the cd can play it.

sony got a lawsuite because of this. It's a violation of privacy. Those little programs that get installed without your knowing can be seen as spyware. I think sony lost the lawsuite, not sure about it.

The funny thing is: one cd managed to install the little bugger on my WinXP system, but on Win98 there appeared an alert window "you need to install additional software to play this cd". After a press on the 'Cancel' button, i could rip it without trouble. ;D

So, I've now got a couple of promo CDs with a "unique" number printed on the disk. Is that number also encoded into the tracks too to aid in tracking? Is this what is meant by watermarking a CD ?

That could be. I think not though, such "watermarking" only works with digital files.
Funny thing is, such watermarked files can be burnt onto a (new) cd. If you rip that cd.... the watermark is gone. ;D
